Term Goals \ Plans |
Players Play - Coaches Coach --- plain and simple.
It is our job to make sure the players have the tools to succeed in whatever level of hockey they are capable of attaining - and have fun doing it. We need to ensure the coaches have the resources, tools and support to train them. Hockey is not a sport that can be mastered quickly; the skills and understanding that are required to play hockey take many years to master. My goal for this term is to help facilitate development of our program by:
- Supporting and Communicating the LHA Program Mission, Vision, and Success criteria to the community. - Working with all development committees to define standard skill characteristic guidelines to support the players and coaches alike through player development consistency. - Assist with optimizing the budget to effectively manage development while maintaining affordability. - Provide Level Directors a voice and support to manage their respective levels appropriately through effective communication and action resolution. - Assist the program level directors to provide direction to coaches regarding all aspects of the sport, including sportsmanship, nutrition, exercise, individual skill development and team strategies which will encourage focusing on mastery of the sport at all levels.
Attempts to master the sport too quickly – or win at all costs, especially at early ages, often leads to frustration for both parent and player alike. This will ultimately lead to player drop-out or parents moving to other programs they feel will provide their players the tools and resources needed to succeed. Kids must continue to love the game during this learning process – and I will work collectively with the entire board to help support these ideals which will serve the program for many years to come.

Association Head Coach
|
Name |
Kevin Boland |
|
Background |
I have been actively coaching in the Lakeville Hockey Association for fourteen years since my oldest son started in the Mite program. I have participated in many outstanding changes in the program as it has grown. I believe in the overall philosophy of the LHA and I look forward to contributing to its continued growth and success. |
|
# Children in LHA |
I have two sons in the LHA at the Pee Wee and High School Levels. |
|
Accomplishments |
14 Years coaching for LHA Level 3 Certification since 2003 |
|
Term Goals \ Plans |
In the LHA, I believe there are many opportunities for enhancement within the coaching process. Many times, coaches find themselves on their own two or three member islands. We need to close those gaps and create a goal oriented cohesive group. This group needs to work together to achieve a common direction, so players from all levels can understand and execute the goals of our association and beyond.
I believe each player needs to develop solid fundamental skills to continue aspiring to the next level. It requires repetition to attain such fundamentals while advancing the difficulty of those repetitive skills as the season progresses. In addition to the fundamentals, I believe each player needs to learn and understand how to play the game, and how to bring creativity and fun back in to their skill set. I am extremely excited to have this opportunity to provide our association coaches with the atmosphere and tools to bring our talented athletes to the desired elite status they deserve.
- Regular coaches meetings with measurable goals and action plans. - Continue to draw on our high school coaches and players for experience and development to keep outside costs down. - Continue to compile new and innovative recourses for our coaches to utilize in developing fundamental skills for their athletes. This will sustain coaches’ confidence and ability to execute the proper training. - Develop a plan in line with ADM (American Development Model). This will enable us to share and utilize the skills of many coaches and players rather than just a few. - Develop a plan to take full advantage of our internal resources such as the Player Development and Hockey Development Coordinators. Maximize training at minimal cost. - Encourage USA Hockey to bring a coaching level 4 clinic to the state of hockey sooner than later, so our coaches do not have to travel out of state to attain a level 4 certification. - Concentrate on creating talented, knowledgeable coaches through peer benchmarking, knowledge and information sharing |
Registrar
|
Name |
Tonyea Patterson |
|
Background |
I have been the LHA Association Manager for the past two years and a LHA team manager for both my son’s and daughter’s LHA teams. |
|
# Children in LHA |
My son is currently playing hockey at the Pee Wee level for LHA and my daughter is playing for Lakeville South High School. |
|
Accomplishments |
During my two years as LHA Association Manager I have assisted with almost all the LHA board positions. My responsibilities as Association Manager has provided myself the ability to be available to answer questions from team managers and coordinated all manager meetings. In addition, I interact with Administration regarding individual registrations and team registration, interact with Operations regarding the ice scheduling/ice draft and Level Directors with the tryout process, and Finance with team billing, financial aid and fundraising.
Since I have been a team manager and the LHA Association Manager, I feel that my past success in LHA provides me the ground work to be successful as the LHA Registrar. I am available to answer questions in a timely manner and feel I have been a good resource for managers which will lend itself well to the Registrar position. One of the responsibilities of the Registrar is to prepare plans for the registration process, and insure those plans are delegated to appropriate Level Directors or other Board Members. This is very similar to the duties of the Association Manager position in interacting with level directors and other board members. In addition, the Registrar is responsible to organize and manage the entire registration process for the entire LHA program similarly to my responsibility as Association Manager regarding all team-managers entire process. |
|
Term Goals \ Plans |
My plan is to remain as LHA Association Manager as well as LHA Registrar and bridge the gap between the two positions in order to streamline the information to and from managers in order to make the registration/roster process go as smoothly as possible. |
Pee Wee Director
|
Name |
Matt Swaney |
|
Background |
I have been the Peewee Director for the last two years. |
|
# Children in LHA |
I have 2 children in LHA. Nick will be a 2nd year Peewee next season and Kaitlyn will be playing her final year U8. |
|
Accomplishments |
I have helped run the try-out process for the peewee level for the past two years. I feel that try-outs the last two years have been very successful. When I say successful, I mean that they went off without any major issues. I have also been the go between for parent and coach issues. In two years we have had only a couple of issues with coaches and parents and I feel they were resolved to the best of my ability. |
|
Term Goals \ Plans |
Having been the Peewee Director for the past two years I think my goals have always been to make sure the kids are put at the correct level based on their skills and that the right coaches are put in place to teach the kids appropriate skills based on their level of play. One of my other goals is to make sure that our participation numbers at the peewee level continue to stay the same. This past season we actually increased our participation by 2 kids at the peewee level.
Plans for the next two years: My plans for the next two years are to work with the rest of the board to keep costs low for our families. In this tough economic time I cannot see how we can increase costs. If we do, I feel our participation numbers will decrease dramatically. I also plan to work with the Hockey Development Committee to put the best coaches in place for each team. I am a strong proponent on non-parent coaches at the “A” level and possibly even the “B1” level if we can find qualified candidates. I also plan to work with the Hockey Development Committee to set up a fair play policy that allows the coaches to coach and the kids to succeed. I think we have lost focus of that over the past few years. We are always looking to blame the coach for not playing all of his players in every situation without understanding why he is doing it. Our coaches job is to worry about the whole team, not just a few kids on the top or the bottom. They walk a fine line when it comes to winning vs. development. We need to set-up a system that allows both to happen and for the coach not to feel like he has everyone looking over his shoulder at every game. |

My plan to accomplish these goals would be to work with all the coaches on practice plans, philosophies, and team goals. It is my belief that you get better at things that you plan, practice and measure. To provide a communication mechanism for players and coaches to answer questions and address concerns about tryouts, teams, level and LHA goals throughout the season. I support the concept that a team may not be finalized until it needs to be submitted to the District.
To support the individual coaches needs and helping them achieve the established LHA, level and team goals. To have input into selecting an appropriate un-biased evaluation group for each level.
To work with the Hockey Development Committee to facilitate the players getting as much quality development opportunities as possible at a reasonable cost. To help ensure that all players get the individual coaching instruction they deserve.
To take the overall “big picture” view and apply it to overall team determination and coach selection process. To build a relationship with the Lakeville High School Girl coaches to not only introduce some consistent drills into the mix at these lower levels, but to discuss areas that could be improved-on early before they get to the High School level.
To foster an environment where there is not only hockey skill development and game time challenges, but off-ice community and association activities…. all which will hopefully lead to players having a good time within LHA and Lakeville.
