I have been very involved with LHA over the past 8 years and would like to take what I have learned and apply it to the player Development position.  I think we need to do a better job from the ground up and have a clear set of objectives for both Coaches and players at each level.  I have always believed in skills based development and would like to be more involved in making sure that we are developing players that have the skill level to compete with the best players from other premier associations

VP of Development

Name

Tim Poehling

Background

15 year resident of Lakeville.  President of Clearspring Consulting (a healthcare consultancy).

# Children in LHA

Four.  1-Mite, 1-Peewee, 2-Bantams

Accomplishments

Have held numerous senior executive positions in Fortune 20 company.  Successful business owner.  Started coaching hockey when I was 20 years old.  Have mentored hundreds of kids through coaching and helped them use sport as an avenue to develop character.  Founder and President of Minnesota EDGE Hockey – An off-season development program that has evolved into seven teams from mites to Bantams; a few of these teams compete at the highest levels Nationally.

Term Goals \ Plans

My goal is to create an association that is the envy of Minnesota Hockey.  When people think of LHA, they should say, “Wow!  What a great program they have in Lakeville.”  I would like to see Mite parents have an option to sign up for a development path and a recreational path.  The recreational path would be similar to what we have today.  The development path would have a specific curriculum that would be deployed by coaches and kids would test into the next level based on their ability to perform specific, pre-defined skills.  At the older levels, we need to simplify things and minimize politics.  Hockey administration should be much simpler than it is today -- Hire the right coach, have a fair tryout process, schedule ice and get out of the way.  I would like to see the selection of “B” teams and “B” coaches become much more than the afterthought that it is today.  I think we should be more diligent in providing player feedback and establish a development profile for each player that carries over from year-to-year.

Mite Prep Director

Name

Brad Charchenko

Background

I have been a part of the game of hockey for over 35 years as a coach and player. I am USA Hockey Level 3 certified.

# Children in LHA

2 children in LHA – Mite and U8

Accomplishments

I have been involved the last several years as a coach or assistant coach for multiple sports in Lakeville – Hockey, Soccer, Baseball, Softball, and Track. Most recently, I completed my 3rd year as a head coach for LHA, coaching two teams, one at the Mite 2 level and one at the U8 level.  I have served as the Mite level coordinator the past 2 years. I have been a part of the Mite and U8 evaluations the past two years, both as an evaluator and an on-ice lead. I have helped plan and coordinate the Mite Madness Jamborees at the Mite and U8 levels the past two years.

Term Goals \ Plan

I understand the need to teach fundamentals to provide a solid foundation so athletes can succeed in the future. By standardizing practice plans and being a resource for coaches at this level, the Mite Prep program can continue to provide that solid foundation. Adopting the research and knowledge that USA Hockey has provided coaches will help shape the program. Stations and small area games are keys to athlete development at this level. I also understand at this level more than anything hockey has to be a fun experience; otherwise children will lose interest and not return. With many other hockey and sports options to choose from, my goal is to simply have them return to LHA year after year.

Term Goals \ Plans

My goals are simple and based on what I perceive to be as potential areas of improvement relative to LHA’s current structure.

1. EVALUATION MODIFICATIONS: I would incorporate a new method for evaluating players, adjusting to a 5-point scale. Skaters would be evaluated on a pre-determined, defined set of drills. Additional subjective observations would be made that would take into account the speed at which the player executes the drill. Previous level played, as well as, grade would also be incorporated into the evaluation process; however there would be no carryover of scores from the previous season. Evaluations would be conducted by an outside group with notable hockey experience.

2. MITE TEAM STRUCTURE: I would establish 3 Mite levels, not dissimilar to what occurred this season; however here are the key differences. I believe strongly in balancing the levels with an equal number of teams and players. No one level should be the beneficiary of overwhelming partiality. Mite 3’s should consist primarily of 3rd graders and potentially a small mix of 2nd graders. Mite 2’s should consist of a few 3rd, mostly 2nd, and a small number of 1st graders. Mite 1’s should consist primarily of 1st graders and Kindergartners. Other key essentials:
• Available ice-time should be disseminated nearly equal among Mite 2’s and 3’s. Mite 1’s will receive slightly less ice-time based on the age of the player; however in turn parents will know that as their son/ daughter progresses they will receive the additional ice-time as they move on to Mite 2’s and 3’s.
• SELLING POINT ---- I would see it as my job to diffuse the emotion involving the team selection process, which I intend to do by stressing my 3rd goal, which is improving the practice structure.

3. PRACTICE STRUCTURE: Obviously a coach needs to be USA certified; however I would take this a step further. I would establish practice plans for each practice based on Mite level. The practice plans would show a progression in skill development throughout the season that parents could see and feel good about. Small groups would be utilized frequently with coaches coordinating drill sets amongst the two teams sharing the ice. Key essentials:
• Eliminate the perception that these teams are being coached by parents with various levels of hockey experience and limited attention devoted to practice progression.
• Once again I would utilize all of the hockey teaching resources we have locally to develop these practice plans and also incorporate anything the Squirt level coaches and coordinators feel is a weakness in the program. The goal is uniformity and consistency in player skill development.
• SELLING POINT ---- This is how we compete with the well-publicized alternatives. We sell a product showing a progression in skills and intensity by level with the emphasis on fully preparing these Mites for Squirts. That’s our primary objective. The practice plans will visually show that and also reduce the pressure and time commitment currently placed on coaches from having to “think up new drills.”

CLOSING COMMENTS:

I’m passionate about creating a positive and productive environment for youth hockey players IN THE LAKEVILLE SCHOOL DISTRICT. Let’s keep our players progressing in the community and utilize the immense resources we have locally to establish a 1st rate youth hockey program in Minnesota. And finally, I’m very pro-democracy regarding improving on some of my stated goals. Again we have the resources; it’s all about packaging it right. More than anything I want my kids to be prepared for Squirts and to be competitive. “My kids” refers to every kid I’ve ever coached. That’s how I approach every season.

Term Goals \ Plans

I have finally decided to run for a position in LHA to foster my passion for Lakeville hockey.  The position I am running for has been an extremely well run position from the past people and I only hope to help steer the ship in the same direction.  I look forward to making sure all aspects of the job are done in an organized and efficient manner.  I am prepared to do anything over my term, if elected, to assist in this capacity and pay it forward as the others before me have.  Hockey is not only a lot of fun for kids but serves as a wonderful stepping stone for life and friends that are made by these kids over the years.  I'll do my job the best that I can and help out in other capacities if called upon.

· 1 - year as Peewee Coach
· 2 - years as high school coach in Mpls.

Term Goals \ Plans

I have been very involved within LHA as a coach over the past several years and have always been extremely committed to player development.  As a coach, I have grown increasingly concerned with the number of players/families who have elected to either stop playing hockey or to pursue other options outside of the association.  That said, I am now interested in taking the next step and get involved at the board level.  I think we need to do a better job of building pride within our association.  While there are no quick fixes.  In my opinion, there are two fundamental ingredients; having fun and developing as a player.  While this could be said for any level, mites and squirts are foundational years for us to tap into the player’s passion for the game.  If elected, I would work to ensure that we maintain this as our focus.
